GRIEF

To find bereavement support groups, both for adults and for children, check with your local hospice. To find hospices in your area, use the "Find a Provider" page at The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. Or use HospiceDirectory (sponsored by Hospice Foundation of America).

You can also check with your local hospital to see if they can point you toward bereavement support groups.

The Dougy Center. Provides resources for children who are grieving, and for their families. Also provides training in creating and facilitating bereavement group programs. They have been the leader in understanding grief in children for over a decade. I attended their Summer Institute to be trained to facilitate grief support groups for children and their families, and highly recommend their approach.

Argus Institute. Located at Colorado State University's college of veterinary medicine, the institute focuses on the human-animal bond. The site has information for families facing the death/euthanasia of an animal companion. (More resources related to pets are on my Pets Resources page.)

The MISS Foundation. The MISS Foundation is a nonprofit corporation committed to helping families discover hope and eventually heal from the trauma of a child's death. Their "Bereaved Children" page is for kids, about grief, plus has suggestions for their grownups.

Touchstones on Grief. Articles on how to cope with the death of someone you love, written by Darcie Sims. I heard Darcie speak at the 1996 World Gathering on Bereavement — about casseroles and toilet paper on the sole of her shoe! She combines humor with good advice -- the Erma Bombeck of grief.

Death Without Denial, Grief Without Apology, by Barbara K. Roberts. "When former Oregon Governor Barbara Roberts' husband, Frank Roberts, was dying from lung cancer, she had to look inside of herself as well as beyond herself to find ways to survive what felt unbearable. What Barbara Roberts learned during the final year of her husband's life, and her subsequent years of grieving, fill the pages of this honest and inspiring book."

MISCELLANEOUS

A beautiful poem, Gone From Me, about sensing the presence of a loved one who has died, can be found at the website of Ruthann Disotell, a Certified Funeral Celebrant serving New Jersey and Pennsylvania: www.celebrationofalifetime.com/id8.html.

Find a grave online: www.findagrave.com. This database doesn't have my grandparents' graves listed — in one of a chain of cemeteries in a populated state. But maybe your loved one is listed.

A short but thoughtful entry on Widow's Quest blog: Coping is not always the best thing.

Click to light a candle on the Gratefulness.org site.Gratefulness.Org, A Network for Grateful Living: home page leads to labyrinth walk, virtual candle lighting, etc. (or click on this image).
